Action
Iron is an essential component of haemoglobin, myoglobin and of the iron-containing enzymes. Iron deficiency can cause the following general symptoms: increased fatigue, decreased mental performance, irritability, anxiety, headaches, loss of appetite, weakening of the immune system, conspicuous paleness, cracks in the corners of the mouth, dry skin, brittle hair and nails.
Indications/Uses
Ferrum Hausmann is an iron preparation used to treat iron deficiency without anaemia (latent iron deficiency) and iron deficiency with anaemia (manifest iron deficiency).
Dosage/Direction for Use
If taking Ferrum Hausmann is forgotten, just take the next dose at the usual time. Do not take a double dose to compensate for a forgotten dose.
Keep to the dosage stated or as prescribed by the doctor. If thinking that the effect of this medicine is too strong or too weak, talk to the doctor or pharmacist.
Chewable tablet: Ferrum Hausmann chewable tablets can be chewed or swallowed whole and should be taken during or directly after meals.
Ferrum Hausmann chewable tablets are not suitable for children under the age of 12.
Adolescents (over 12 years), adults: Iron deficiency with anaemia: 1 chewable tablet 1-3 times daily for 3-5 months until blood test values have returned to normal. The daily dosage can also be taken in one dose. Subsequently, treatment is continued with one chewable tablet for several weeks in order to replenish the iron stores.
Iron deficiency without anaemia: 1 chewable tablet daily for 1-2 months.
The dose and duration of treatment depend on the extent of the iron deficiency. The exact duration of treatment is determined by the doctor in each case.
Drops/Syrup: Ferrum Hausmann drops/syrup should be taken during or directly after meals. They can be mixed with fruit or vegetable juice or with bottle food. The slight discolouration does not impair the effect or the taste. The daily dose can be taken all at once or divided into multiple individual doses.
The dose and duration of treatment depend on the extent/severity of the iron deficiency. In the case of iron deficiency anaemia, treatment lasts an average of 3-5 months until blood test values have returned to normal again. Treatment is then continued at the dose indicated for iron deficiency without anaemia for several weeks to replenish the iron stores. For iron deficiency without anaemia, treatment lasts about 1-2 months. The exact duration of treatment is determined by the doctor in each case.
Drops: 1 drop corresponds to 0.050 mL, or 2.5 mg iron. 1 mL corresponds to 20 drops, or 50 mg iron.
Hold the bottle upside down and vertical. A drop will form immediately at the end of the dropper bottle. If this is not the case, tap the bottle gently until a drop forms. Do not shake the bottle.
Iron deficiency anaemia: Premature babies: 1-2 drops/kg of body weight daily for 3-5 months.
Infants aged up to 1 year: 10-20 drops daily.
Children (aged 1-12 years): 20-40 drops daily.
Adolescents over 12 years and adults: 40-120 drops daily.
Iron deficiency without anaemia: Infants aged up to 1 year: 6-10 drops daily.
Children (aged 1-12 years): 10-20 drops daily.
Adolescents over 12 years and adults: 20-40 drops daily.
Syrup: Use the measuring cup included for exact dosing. One measuring cup corresponds to a volume of 15 mL, corresponding to 150 mg iron.
Iron deficiency anaemia: Infants aged up to 1 year: 2.5-5 mL daily.
Children (aged 1-12 years): 5-10 mL daily.
Adolescents over 12 years and adults: 10-30 mL daily.
Iron deficiency without anaemia: The syrup is not suitable for infants aged up to 1 year. Ferrum Hausmann drops are available for the treatment of these children.
Children (aged 1-12 years): 2.5-5 mL daily.
Adolescents over 12 years and adults: 5-10 mL daily.
Overdosage
If Ferrum Hausmann is taken more than it should have been, talk to the doctor or pharmacist.
Contraindications
In the case of known hypersensitivity or intolerance to the active substance iron (III) hydroxide polymaltose complex or to any of the other ingredients (see Description).
In the case of iron overload in the body (for example caused by rare iron storage diseases which can lead to iron accumulations in the tissues).
In the case of so-called iron utilisation disorders (for example when the anaemia is due to insufficient utilisation of the iron).
In the case of anaemia which is not caused by iron deficiency (e.g. caused by increased haemoglobin breakdown or vitamin B12 deficiency).
Special Precautions
Before taking Ferrum Hausmann is started, a doctor should confirm the blood's iron and haemoglobin levels using appropriate tests. If the symptoms are not caused by iron deficiency, Ferrum Hausmann will not be effective. The doctor will want to monitor the progress of the treatment with periodic follow-up examinations and may even carry out blood tests. This is normal and should not be alarming. If symptoms do not improve within three weeks, see the doctor.
Tell the doctor or pharmacist before taking Ferrum Hausmann if an infection or a tumour is present.
Tell the doctor or pharmacist if have recently been treated with injectable iron preparations or might be treated with these. Using such iron preparations at the same time as Ferrum Hausmann is not recommended.
Tell the doctor if blood transfusions have been received as there is a risk of iron overload as a result of the additional administration of iron.
Tell the doctor or pharmacist if: suffering from other illnesses; having any allergies; taking any other medicines (including over-the-counter medicines) or using any other medicines externally.
