Diclofenac diethylamine.
Description
100 g of Voltaren Emulgel contains 1.16 g diclofenac diethylamine, which is equivalent to 1 g of diclofenac sodium.
Excipients/Inactive Ingredients: It also contains propylene glycol, isopropyl alcohol, perfume and other excipients.
Action
Voltaren Emulgel acts against pain and inflammation. Its water and alcohol content gives it a soothing, refreshing effect.
Indications/Uses
Voltaren Emulgel is used for the local treatment of pain, inflammation and swelling caused by sports-related injuries or accidents such as sprains, bruises, strains and back pain following sport activity or an accident.
If recommended by the doctor or pharmacist, Voltaren Emulgel can also be used for local treatment of various rheumatic joint or muscle pain, e.g. stiffness in the shoulders and arthritis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adults and children over 12 years of age: Depending on the size of the painful area to be treated, gently rub in 2 to 4 g of Voltaren Emulgel (an amount the size of a cherry or walnut) 3 to 4 times a day. If the patient has muscular pain, he/she can rub the area slightly more firmly. Wash the hands thoroughly afterwards, unless the patient is using the product to treat arthritis of the finger joints. If the patient uses more Voltaren Emulgel than he/she should, wipe off the surplus gel with a tissue.
To remove the seal before first use, unscrew and remove the cap.
Use the reverse side of the cap to insert, twist and remove the seal from the tube.
If the patient does not notice any improvement after one week or if the symptoms get worse, consult the doctor. Without a prescription, do not use Voltaren Emulgel for more than two weeks.
Children under 12 years of age: The use and safety of Voltaren Emulgel in children under 12 has not yet been systematically tested.
The patient should use the dose specified on the package leaflet or prescribed by the doctor. If the patient thinks that the efficacy of the medicinal product is too weak, or on the other hand, too strong, please consult the doctor or pharmacist for advice.
Contraindications
Voltaren Emulgel should not be used if the patient is allergic (hypersensitive) to diclofenac (active substance) or to other substances which relieve pain and inflammation (in particular acetylsalicylic acid and ibuprofen), or if the patient is allergic to propylene glycol and isopropyl alcohol or to any of the other ingredients.
Among other symptoms, this hypersensitivity is usually manifested as: asthma, respiratory problems, rashes, urticaria, swelling of the face and tongue, runny nose.
Special Precautions
Voltaren Emulgel should not be applied to an open wound (e.g. a graze or a cut) or to skin that has a rash (e.g. eczema). Voltaren Emulgel should not be applied for long periods of time over large areas of skin, unless prescribed by the doctor. Avoid contact with the eyes and mucous membranes. In case of contact, rinse well with cold water.
Tell the doctor or pharmacist if any discomfort persists.
Do not swallow the product.
A brace or wrap commonly used for injuries like sprains can be used but do not use under airtight (plastic) bandages.
Tell the doctor or pharmacist if the patient has had allergic reactions after using similar products (e.g. anti-rheumatism ointments), if the patient is suffering from another illness, if the patient has any allergies, or if the patient is already using any other externally applied medication (even self-medication).
If the patient or a child accidentally swallows the gel, contact the doctor immediately.
Use In Pregnancy & Lactation
If the patient is pregnant or breast-feeding, thinks she may be pregnant or is planning to have a baby, ask the doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
Do not use Voltaren Emulgel if the patient is pregnant, especially during the last 3 months of pregnancy, as it could harm the unborn child or cause problems at delivery.
Do not use Voltaren Emulgel if the patient is breast-feeding.
Side Effects
The use of Voltaren Emulgel can cause the side effects listed as follows: in rare and very rare cases, these side effects can be very serious.
Stop using Voltaren Emulgel and consult immediately the doctor in case of: Skin rash with blisters; hives. (may affect between 1 and 10 in every 10,000 people); Wheezing, shortness of breath or feeling of tightness in the chest (asthma). (may affect less than 1 in every 10,000 people); Swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat. (may affect less than 1 in every 10,000 people).
Other side effects which may occur are usually mild and passing (if the patient is concerned, tell a doctor or pharmacist).
Common side effects (may affect between 1 and 10 in every 100 people): Skin rash, itching, reddening or smarting of the skin.
Very rare side effects (may affect less than 1 in every 10,000 people): The skin may be more sensitive to the sun. Possible signs are sunburn with itching, swelling and blistering.
If the patient notices any side effects not listed, please tell the doctor or pharmacist about them.
Storage
Do not store above 30°C.
