Procaine benzylpenicillin.
Description
Procaine benzylpenicillin is a white crystalline powder with odorless or slightly specific odor. It is slightly soluble in water.
Indications/Uses
Treatment of infection caused by gram positive and gram negative microorganism susceptible to benzylpenicillin: Streptococci (except Enterococci), Pneumococci, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Corynebacterium diphtheriae, penicillin-susceptible Staphylococci and Treponema pallidum: Furuncle, carbuncle, impetigo, phlegmon, erysipelas; mastitis, lymphadenitis; tonsillitis, pharyngitis, laryngitis, bronchitis, pneumonia; gonorrhoea, syphilis; diphtheria (in combination with antitoxin); scarlet fever; otitis media and sinusitis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adults: 300,000-900,000 units once or twice daily by IM injection. In the treatment of syphilis, the dosage is 600,000 units once daily by IM route.
The dosage may be adjusted according to age or severity of the infection.
Children: 10,000 U/kg body weight daily.
Administration: Procaine Penicillin-G Meiji should be injected IM into the buttocks, thigh, deltoid or triceps muscle. In case continuous injection is necessitated, the injection site should be changed every time.
Reconstitution: Add about 8 mL of sterile water for injection to the vial and shake vigorously to make a homogenous suspended solution.
Special Precautions
Administration of Procaine Penicillin-G Meiji may cause anaphylactic reactions in rare cases. Close observation of the symptoms is needed during therapy. If symptoms eg, discomfort, abnormal sensation in the mouth, wheezing, vertigo, unusual bowel movements, etc, are seen, administration should be discontinued.
It is desirable to conduct penicillin-hypersensitivity skin test before therapy.
If allergic reactions eg, skin rash, urticaria, etc, occur, administration should be discontinued.
If patients have past or family history of allergic reactions eg, bronchial asthma, skin rash, urticaria, etc, Procaine Penicillin-G Meiji should be given under careful observation.
Procaine Penicillin-G Meiji is for IM route only. It should be administered by or under the supervision of a physician.
