Ascorbic acid.
Description
Bylo C 500: Each effervescent tablet contains: Ascorbic Acid 500 mg.
Bylo C 1000: Each effervescent tablet contains: Ascorbic acid 1 g.
Excipients: Colour: Sunset yellow Q.S.
Action
Vitamin C effervescent tablets contains ascorbic acid which is a form of vitamin C, a water-soluble antioxidant which may help protect from the damaging effect of free radicals. Free radicals are highly reactive and unstable chemicals generated during normal body activities that require oxygen such as breathing, eating, exercising and immune protection by white blood cells, as well as exposure to UV light, pollutants and cigarette smoke.
Indications/Uses
Vitamin C is used for prevention and treatment of Vitamin C deficiency especially scurvy, a bleeding disorder which occurs rather infrequently in infants and adults (e.g. bottle-fed infants and elderly people).
Vitamin C is concerned with the formation and maintenance of intercellular supporting structures like collagen, cartilage, dentine, bone matrix etc. It is also related to the synthesis of intercellular cement of the capillary endothelium.
Vitamin C functions in a number of biochemical reactions mostly involving oxidation. Ascorbic acid improves resistance to infections. Delayed healing of wounds, postoperative breakdown of incisions and delayed union of fractures may sometimes be at least partly the result of unrecognized but severe vitamin C deficiency. Vitamin C plays an essential role in the medical care in patients with thermal burns for they too develop vitamin C deficiency. Vitamin C is essential for the protection of folic acid reductase which converts folic acid to folinic acid. It may participate in the release of free folic acid from its conjugates in food and it facilitates the absorption of iron. It stimulates maturation of developing blood cells in bone marrow.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Vitamin C effervescent tablets can be taken as 1 to 2 tablets daily in case of 500 mg tablet and 1 tablet daily in case of 1000 mg tablet. Or as directed by the physician.
Direction for use: Dissolve one tablet in a glass of water (approx 200 mL). Drink as soon as tablet dissolves.
Do not chew or swallow the tablets.
Overdosage
Due to the intake of high doses of Ascorbic acid (vitamin C) 4 g per day by patients with an erythrocytic glucose-6 phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, partly serious haemolyses have been observed in single cases. therefore, exceeding the recommendation dose must be avoided.
Renal and Hepatic impairment: Increased intake of ascorbic acid (vitamin C) over a prolonged period may result in an increase in renal clearance of ascorbic acid (vitamin C) and deficiency may result, if it is withdrawn in case of the susceptibility to renal calculi. There is the risk of the formation of calcium oxalate calculi due to the intake of high dose of ascorbic acid (vitamin C). Patient with recurring formation of renal calculi are recommended not to exceed a daily ascorbic acid (vitamin C) uptake of 100 to 200 mg. For patient with extreme or terminal renal insufficiency (patient of dialysis) respectively. A daily vitamin C uptake of 50 to 100 mg ascorbic acid (vitamin C) should not be exceeded because otherwise, there is the risk of hyperoxalataemia and crystallisations of oxalate in the kidneys. This medicinal product contains 516 mg sodium per dose and to be taken carefully in patients following salt restricted diet (e.g hypertensive patients). The administration of gram doses can elevate the ascorbic acid (vitamin C) concentration in the urine to such a degree that the measurement of various clinical-chemical parameters (glucose, uric acid, creatinine, inorganic phosphate) is impaired. Likewise gram doses can lead to false-negative results in the attempted detections of occult blood in stools.
Generally, chemical detection method which are based on colour reactions can be affected. The colouring contained in ascorbic acid (vitamin C) can cause allergic reactions, including asthma such as allergic reactions can occur in persons allergic to acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin) or similarly preparations.
Contraindications
Do not take the medicine if: Allergic to ascorbic acid (vitamin C) or any of the other ingredients; if suffering from kidney stones (oxalate) unless advised by doctor; if suffering from certain illness where too much iron is absorbed by the body (thalassaemia, haemochromatosis, sideroblastic anaemia).
Special Precautions
Special care should be taken when taking vitamin C: If suffering from hereditary disorders of red blood cells (e.g. glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency), do not exceed the recommended dose (1000 mg per day).
If taking increased dose of vitamin C over prolonged periods, a lack o vitamin C is possible when stopping the treatment. An increased intake may result in an increase in renal clearance of vitamin C.
If at risk of recurring formation of kidney stones, patient should not exceed a daily vitamin C intake of 100 to 200 mg. In case of susceptibility to kidney stones, there is the risk of the formation of kidney stones (calcium oxalate calculi) due to the intake of high doses of vitamin C.
If suffering from severe kidney disease (dialysis patients), do not take a daily vitamin C dose exceeding 50 to 100 mg of vitamin C, because otherwise there is the risk of developing high concentrations of oxalate in the blood (hyperoxalataemia) with the formation of crystals of salts (oxalate) in kidneys. Consult doctor.
Avoid high vitamin C doses if suffering from renal failure and if taking medicinal products whit negative effect on the renal function.
Adverse Reactions
Like all medicines, vitamin C effervescent tablets may cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
Respiratory and cutaneous hypersensitivity reactions have been observed in isolated cases.
Stop taking the medicine immediately and consult the doctor if suffering an allergic reaction after taking. An allergic reaction may include itching, rash, swelling on the face, lips, tongue and/or throat with difficulty in swallowing or breathing.
If experiencing any of the following, see doctor or pharmacist: Diarrhoea, stomach cramps, nausea (feeling sick), vomiting (being sick).
Flushing or redness of the skin.
Haemolytic anaemia (where the body's immune system attacks its own red blood cells), signs may include fatigue and paleness.
Diuretic effect (increased urine flow) due to increased intake of ascorbic acid over a prolonged period. This may lead to deficiency if the amount of ascorbic acid taken is reduced or stopped rapidly. High doses of over 600 mg daily can have a diuretic effect in some patients.
Headache.
Drug Interactions
Although the following interactions between ascorbic acid (vitamin C) and other drugs have been described, their relevance at the proposed dosage is not documented: Ascorbic acid (vitamin C) in a dosage of 1 g daily increases the bioavailability or oral contraceptives (oestrogens).
Corticosteroids increase the oxidations of ascorbic acid calcitonin increases the rate of ascorbic acid (vitamin C) consumption.
Salicylates inhibit active transportation though the intestine.
Tetracyclines inhibit intracellular metabolism and reabsorption from the renal tube.
Acetylsalicylic acid, barbiturates and tetracyclines increases ascorbic acid (vitamin C) excretions in the urine several cases have been reported, in which ascorbic acid appeared to reduce the effect of warfarin.
Ascorbic acid (vitamin C) can decrease the therapeutic effect of phenothiazines. The concentrations of fluphenazine may also be reduced. Chronic use of high dose of ascorbic acid (vitamin C) may interfere with disulfiram-alcohol interaction when used concurrently. Alcohol reduces ascorbic acid levels.
Caution For Usage
Talk to the doctor or pharmacist before taking vitamin C effervescent tablets: If patient will undergo any blood or urine tests as ascorbic acid can interfere with some blood and urine tests.
If patient is a regular smoker.
If patient has kidney failure as ascorbic acid enhances aluminum absorption (present in antacid) which may react toxic levels.
Storage
Store at temperatures not exceeding 30°C, in cool and dry place. Protect from moisture and light.
