Each mL contains: Chloramphenicol 5 mg.
Excipients/Inactive Ingredients: Vehicle: Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose 5.0 mg (4,000 cps).
Preservative: Thimerosal 0.1 mg.
Inactive: Boric Acid 20 mg, Sodium Borate (to adjust pH); Purified Water.
In bacterial conjunctivitis and other superficial ocular infections caused by susceptible organisms, which include Escherichia coli, Haemophilus influenzae, Staphylococcus aureus (Micrococcus pyogenes), Streptococcus hemolyticus, Morax-Axenfeld bacillus. Prophylactically for abrasions of the cornea and following removal of foreign bodies from the cornea.
Instill two drops into the affected eye or eyes every three hours. It is recommended that day and night administration be continued for the first 48 hours after which the frequency of applications may be reduced. Continue therapy for 48 hours after the eye appears normal.
Contraindicated for patients who have previously shown sensitivity to the drug.
Sensitization may develop following the topical application of this drug. Signs of local irritations with subjective symptoms of itching and burning, angioneurotic edema, urticaria, vesicular and maculopapular dermatitis have been reported in patients sensitive to chloramphenicol. Discontinue use immediately. Prolonged use of antibiotics may occasionally result in overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms including fungi. If this occurs, discontinue chloramphenicol eye drops and institute appropriate treatment. Systemic chloramphenicol has been known to produce bone marrow hypoplasia, depression of erythropoiesis and aplastic anemia and visual disturbances.
Keep tightly closed after use. Store at temperatures not exceeding 30°C.
