Erythromycin ophthalmic ointment is a sterile preparation of Erythromycin 0.5% on a suitable ointment base.
Use in prophylaxis of neonatal ophthalmia due to Neisseria gonorrhoeae or Chlamydia trachomatis.
Use in treatment of superficial ocular infection involving the conjunctiva and/or cornea caused by organisms susceptible to Erythromycin.
Erythromycin ophthalmic ointment should be applied directly to the infected eye 4-6 times daily, depending upon the severity of the infection or as prescribed by the physician.
For prophylaxis of neonatal gonococcal or Chlamydial ophthalmia, 1 to 1.5 centimeter ribbon should be applied into each lower conjunctival sac.
To avoid contamination, avoid touching tip of applicator to any surface.
A new tube should be used for each infant.
Antimicrobial agents use may be associated with the overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms including fungi. In such a case, antibiotic administration should be discontinued and appropriate measures should be taken.
Erythromycin and its derivatives should be avoided in patients known to be hypersensitive to it, or in patients who have a history of liver disorders.
Keep tightly closed after use. Store at temperature not exceeding 30°C.
