Used in general anesth for diagnostic or short surgical operations that do not require skeletal muscle relaxation; for the induction of anesth to be maintained w/ other drugs; supplementary anesth.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Individualize dosing. Initial IV dose 1-4.5 mg ketamine/kg BW. Initial IM dose 6.5-13 mg/kg. Initial IV infusion dose 0.5-2 mg/kg at an appropriate infusion rate.
Contraindications
HTN, CVA. Presence of eye injury or increased IOP.
Special Precautions
Monitor cardiac function for patients w/ HTN or cardiac decompensation. Elevated IOP & CSF pressure. Avoid mechanical stimulation of the pharynx. Verbal, tactile & visual stimuli should be kept to a minimum during recovery in an attempt to reduce the risk of emergence reactions.
