Indications/Uses
Prevention & therapy of damages due to faulty or deficient protein metabolism in chronic renal insufficiency in connection w/ limited protein in food of ≤40 g daily for adults ie, generally in patients w/ GFR <25 mL/min or between 5-15 mL/min.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult (70 kg) 4-8 tab tid. Duration: As long as GFR is between 5 & about 15 mL/min & simultaneously food should contain ≤40 g daily.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Swallow whole, do not chew/crush.
Contraindications
Hypercalcemia, disturbed amino acid metabolism. Hereditary phenylketonuria.
Special Precautions
Regularly monitor serum Ca. Ensure sufficient calorie intake. Pregnancy & lactation. Ped patients.
Drug Interactions
May trigger or worsen pathological increase in serum Ca level w/ medicinal products containing Ca eg, acetolyte. Reduce dose of Al hydroxide as uremic symptoms improve w/ therapy. Concomitant use w/ medicinal products which form poorly soluble compd w/ Ca eg, tetracyclines, quinolones (eg, ciprofloxacin & norfloxacin), prep containing Fe, fluoride & estramustine. Increased sensitivity to medicinal products which increase heart action (eg, cardiac glycosides) & thus risk of cardiac arrhythmia is increased if administration of treatment leads to increased blood levels of Ca.
