Meropenem trihydrate
Indications/Uses
Treatment of susceptible infections including intra-abdominal infections, meningitis, resp tract infections (including cystic fibrosis), septicemia, skin infections & UTI in immunocompromised patients.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Slow inj over 3-5 min or by infusion over 15-30 min. Adult Usual dose: 0.5-1 g 8 hrly, increased to 2 g 8 hrly in cystic fibrosis & meningitis. CrCl 26-50 mL/min 1 unit dose 12 hrly, 10-25 mL/min ½ usual dose 12 hrly, 10 mL/min ½ usual dose 24 hrly. Childn >3 mth & <50 kg 10-20 mg/kg 8 hrly, increased to 40 mg/kg 8 hrly in cystic fibrosis.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity.
Adverse Reactions
Skin rashes, urticaria, eosinophilia, fever. Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, tooth or tongue discoloration, altered taste, superinfections w/ nonsusceptible bacteria eg, E. faecium, P. aeruginosa strains w/ acquired resistance & Candida. Pseudomembranous colitis. Increase liver enzymes, abnormal hematological parameters, +ve Coombs' test. Pain or thrombophlebitis at the inj site.
Drug Interactions
Probenecid, aspirin or warfarin, antiepileptics eg, valproate, hepatotoxic drugs.
