Fosfomycin trometamol
Indications/Uses
Acute bacterial cystitis, acute episodes in relapsing bacterial cystitis, acute bacterial urethro-vesical syndrome, nonspecific bacterial urethritis. Significant asymptomatic bacteriuria. Post-op urinary infections. Prophylaxis of UTI in surgical or diagnostic procedure involving lower urinary tract in adult.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Acute infection of lower urinary tract (cystitis, non-gonococcal urethritis) 3 g as a single dose. Elderly, bedridden patient & recurrent infections or infections due to pseudomonas, enterobacter, indole + proteus 2 doses 24-hr. Prophylaxis of UTI in surgical & diagnostic procedure involving lower urinary tract 3 g 3 hr before surgery & 3 g 24 hr after surgery.
Administration
Should be taken on an empty stomach: Take 2-3 hr apart from meals.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Severe renal failure (CrCl <10 mL/min) & patients on hemodialysis.
Special Precautions
Anaphylaxis & anaphylactic shock. Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea. Fructose intolerance, glucose-galactose malabsorption or sucrose-isomaltase insufficiency. May impair ability to drive or operate machinery. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn <12 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Vulvovag; headache, dizziness; diarrhea, nausea, dyspepsia.
Drug Interactions
Lowered serum & urine conc w/ metoclopramide & other drugs that increase GI motility. Increased anti-vit K antagonists activity w/ antibiotics (fluoroquinolones, macrolides, cyclins, co-trimoxazole & certain cephalosporins).
