Azithromycin dihydrate
Indications/Uses
Resp infections caused by S. pyogenes, S. pneumoniae, M. catarrhalis, C. trachomatis, Legionella spp., Mycoplasma pneumoniae, S. aureus, H. influenzae; C. pneumoniae, M. avium infection; uncomplicated chlamydial urethritis, cervicitis or pharyngitis. Alternative drug for multi-drug resistant Salmonella typhi infection outside CNS.
Dosage/Direction for Use
10 mg/kg daily orally for 3 days or 10 mg/kg as a single dose on day 1 then 5 mg/kg on days 2-5.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to azithromycin, erythromycin, any macrolide or ketolide antibiotic.
Special Precautions
Not to be given in patients w/ hepatic impairment. Contains FD&C yellow No.5 which may cause allergic reactions. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Anaphylactic reaction; visual impairment; diarrhoea, abdominal pain, nausea, flatulence.
Drug Interactions
Reduced peak serum conc w/ antacids. Possibly raise digoxin levels. Increased phosphorylated zidovudine conc. Possibility of ergotism w/ ergot derivatives. Increased Cmax & AUC of ciclosporin. Increased conc w/ nelfinavir.
