Aminophylline

Indications/Uses

Relaxation of smooth muscle, treatment of asthma & heart failure.

Dosage/Direction for Use

Individualized dosage.

Administration

Should be taken on an empty stomach: Take at least 1 hr before or 2 hr after meals.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to theophylline, caffeine, theobromine & ethylenediamine. Peptic ulcer, active gastritis. Severe renal or liver impairment.

Special Precautions

Hyperthyroidism; glaucoma, DM, angina pectoris; pulmonary, CV, renal or hepatic diseases. Pregnancy. Childn. Elderly.

Adverse Reactions

GI upset, nervousness, urinary frequency.

Drug Interactions

Mutual antagonism w/ β-adrenergic blockers. May increase CNS stimulation caused by sympathomimetics & decrease efficacy of lithium & phenytoin. May enhance toxicity of digitalis glycosides.
