Ubidecarenone (coenzyme Q10).
Description
Ubidecarenone (Co-enzyme Q10) 100 mg.
Excipients/Inactive Ingredients: Soya-bean oil, Hydrogenated soya-bean oil, Antioxidant (d-alpha-tocopherol prep).
Capsule shell: Gelatin (Beef), Glycerol, Purified water, Colour agent (Iron oxide).
Indications/Uses
Prevention and treatment of Co-enzyme Q10 deficiency and adjuvant with muscular energy-deficiency including heart disease associated with Co-enzyme Q10 deficiency.
Dosage/Direction for Use
The normal dose for adult is 1-2 capsules daily. If two capsules are taken daily, the dose should be spread over the day (e.g. one capsule in the morning and one in the evening). In order to optimize the absorption of Ubidecarenone, it is recommended that Bio-Quinone Q10 100 mg is taken with meals. An initial dose of 2 capsules daily can be used adjuvant therapy to optimal conventional treatment. After about six months, the dose may be reduced based on monitoring of the patient's symptomatic response - to a maintenance dose of 1 capsule daily.
Overdosage
There are no case reports of overdose. Daily doses of 600 mg Ubidecarenone have been used for many months in clinical trials without serious adverse effects.
Contraindications
None known.
Warnings
Use by children: Not recommended to children under the age of 12.
Use by elderly: Preparation can be used in the recommended dosage.
Use by persons with specific pathological conditions: Preparation can be used in the recommended dosage.
Warning regarding excipients: Soya-bean oil: Can if consumed in large quantities result in upset stomach or diarrhea. In the recommended dosage it is unlikely that such problems should occur.
Glycerol: Can if consumed in large quantities, result in headache, upset stomach and diarrhea. In the recommended dosage it is unlikely that such problems should occur.
Use in Pregnancy & Lactation: Bio-Quinone Q10 100 mg should not be taken during pregnancy and lactation.
Special Precautions
Occasional case reports suggest that Ubidecarenone may influence the INR (International Normalised Ratio) of persons on warfarin anticoagulant therapy. Thus care should be taken when giving Bio-Quinone Q10 100 mg to patients taking warfarin or coumarin preparations. Bio-Quinone Q10 can be taken in such patients, but extra control of INR before, during, and after treatment with Ubidecarenone is recommended.
A randomized, controlled study of the influence of Bio-Quinone Q10 100 mg on coagulation function in persons on stable warfarin therapy did not observe a significant effect on INR or the warfarin dosage required.
Effect on ability to drive and use machinery: Bio-Quinone Q10 100 mg does not affect a person's ability to drive a motor vehicle or operate machinery.
Use In Pregnancy & Lactation
Bio-Quinone Q10 100 mg should not be taken during pregnancy and lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Headache, vertigo/dizziness, nausea, diarrhea, rash.
Should the patient believe that after taking the preparation, suffers from any other undesirable effect than the ones listed, the patient is advised to inform the doctor.
Drug Interactions
Occasional case reports suggest that Ubidecarenone may reduce the effectiveness of warfarin and coumarin anticoagulant in some patients. Large dose of vitamin E (350 mg) appear to inhibit the absorption of Bio-Quinone Q10 100 mg when the two are taken simultaneously. Bio-Quinone Q10 100 mg was not found to affect glycaemic control or insulin requirements in clinical trial with type 1 or type 2 diabetes. Kidney dialysis patients do not appear to be adversely affected by Ubidecarenone supplementation.
