Chlorhexidine is used to treat gingivitis, mouth ulcers, and swelling in the palate where your denture is attached (denture stomatitis).
This medicine is also used to prevent tooth decay.
Use Chlorhexidine exactly as directed as by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not use more or less than instructed by your doctor.
This medicine is available as a solution, gel, or spray.
If you are using Chlorhexidine mouthwash, rinse the mouth for about 1 minute before spitting out. Do not swallow. If using on dentures, soak your dentures in Chlorhexidine mouthwash solution for 15 minutes.
If you are using Chlorhexidine gel, brush teeth thoroughly with 1 inch of gel on a moistened toothbrush for about 1 minute before spitting out. Do not rinse after applying gel. If using on dentures, brush dentures with 2.5 cm of gel for about 1 minute.
If you are using Chlorhexidine spray, spray to the teeth, gums or other sore areas in the mouth.
Use the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skipped the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.
DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
If you often forget to use your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
Do not use this medicine if you ever had an allergic reaction (rashes, breathlessness, swollen face) to Chlorhexidine.
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Tell your doctor if your condition does not improve or if it worsens.
Chlorhexidine may cause discolouration of teeth, tongue, and fabrics.
Be sure to check with your doctor or pharmacist before giving Chlorhexidine to a child or an elderly. Children and elderly may be more sensitive to the side effects.
If you develop rashes, swollen mouth or eyes, stop using Chlorhexidine and inform your doctor quickly. These could be signs of an allergic reaction.
This medicine may cause any of the following side effects: dry mouth and tongue, and tooth discolouration.
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
