Carbocysteine is S-(carboxymethyl) cysteine.
Molecular Formula: HOOC-CH2-S-CH2-CH(NH2)-COOH.
Flemex Kids: Each 1 teaspoonful (5ml) contains Carbocysteine 100 mg.
Mucolytic agent for oral administration.
Reduces sputum helps expectoration and ease cough.
Pharmacology: Flemex (carbocysteine) and Flemex kids act on the mucosa of the airway by altering the synthesis of respiratory mucus which is produced by irritated mucosa and liquefying the mucus for easy expectoration.
Flemex and Flemex Kids are indicated in respiratory disorders characterized by excessive or viscous mucus, e.g. acute and chronic bronchitis, bronchiectasis, cold, asthmatic bronchitis and emphysema.
Flemex: In otorhinolaryngology, Flemex is indicated as adjunctive therapy in otitis, sinusitis, nasopharyngitis, tubal otorrhea and in reducing hypersecretion prior to surgery.
Flemex: Tablet: Adults: 2 tablets 3 times daily.
This can be reduced to 1 tablet 3 times daily after a satisfactory response has been obtained.
Syrup: Adults: 1 tablespoonful 3 times daily.
Children 5-12 years: 1 teaspoonful 3 times daily.
Children 2-5 years: ¼-½ teaspoonful (1.25-2.5 ml.) 4 times daily.
Flemex Kids: Infants and children under 2 years: ½ teaspoonful (2.5 ml) 1-2 times daily.
Children 2-5 years: 1 teaspoonful (5 ml) 1-2 times daily or as prescribed by physician.
Cases of overdosage with carbocysteine have not been reported. In case of overdosage, the patient should have nausea and vomiting. If vomiting does not occur, it can be induced by the conventional means, including gastric lavage.
Hypersensitivity to carbocysteine or the presence of an active peptic ulcer are contraindications to the use of Flemex and Flemex Kids. Although there is no evidence that this substance has any physical or chemical effect on gastric mucus, the possibility of a change in gastric mucus cannot be excluded.
Patients with a history of peptic ulcer should be examined to exclude the presence of an active ulcer before administering Flemex and Flemex Kids.
Flemex: Use of antitussive agents concomitantly with Flemex is not recommended.
Be cautious in use due to 5% alcohol content.
Flemex Kids: During the treatment, patients should be reminded to expect an increase in the flow of secretions.
Flemex: Although animal testing demonstrated no teratogenic effect, the safe use of Flemex in pregnancy has not been established.
This incidence is approximately 3.5%.
Most common are mild gastrointestinal symptoms and nausea, which subside with lowering of dosage or discontinuance of treatment.
In human studies, no interference was noted with the activities of antibiotics, sulfonamides, antihistamines or corticosteroids.
In animal studies, no interference was noted with the activities of epinephrine, amphetamines, barbiturates or reserpine.
