Kanamycin.
Description
Composition vial contains Kanamycin Sulfate equivalent to kanamycin base 1 gram.
Action
Mechanism of action: Inhibiting protein synthesis in susceptible bacteria. Kanamycin is effective against a wide variety of gram-negative and some gram-positive bacteria, and is used for the prevention of bacterial contamination of cell cultures.
Indications/Uses
Treatment of serious infections caused by susceptible strains of the designated microorganisms as follows. Bacteriological studies to identify the causative organisms and to determine their susceptibility to kanamycin should be performed.
Kanamycin may be considered as initial therapy in the treatment of infections where one or more of the following are.
Dosage/Direction for Use
DOSAGE: Parenteral: Susceptible Gram-negative infections, Susceptible staphylococcal infections: Adult: 15 mg/kg in 2 divided doses every 12 hours.
Paediatric: 7.5 mg/kg 2 divided doses.
Renal Impairment: Dosage adjustment needed.
Reconstitution: IV infusion: Add 1 gram of 3 mL of compatible IV fluid (e.g. Sterile water solution for injection, NaCl 0.9%).
For Intramuscular use.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to kanamycin and other aminoglycosides.
Special Precautions
Patient w/ neuromuscular disorders (e.g. myasthenia gravis, parkinsonism, or infant botulism), pre-existing vertigo, tinnitus or hearing loss, hypocalcemia. Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms. Renal impairment.
Monitoring Parameters: Monitor renal and auditory function.
Use in Pregnancy & Lactation: Pregnancy and lactation.
Use in Children: Children, premature infants, neonates.

Adverse Reactions
Ototoxicity, nephrotoxicity.
Skin rash, drug fever, headache, paraesthesia, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, malabsorption syndrome characterised by an increase in faecal fat, decrease in serum carotene, and fall in xylose absorption; irritation or pain on inj site (IM).
Potentially Fatal: Neuromuscular blockade w/ resp paralysis.
