Budesonide
Indications/Uses
Bronchial asthma; when oral steroid therapy replacement or reduction is desirable. COPD exacerbations w/o signs of acute resp insufficiency. Acute laryngotracheo-bronchitis (croup) in infants & childn.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Severe asthma Adult 1-2 mg bid. Maintenance: 0.5-1 mg bid. Childn 0.5-1 mg bid. Maintenance: 0.25-0.5 mg bid. COPD exacerbations 4-8 mg daily divided into 2-4 administrations until clinical improvement is achieved. Max duration: 10 days. Acute laryngotracheo-bronchitis (croup) Childn & infant 2 mg as single dose.
Special Precautions
Not for rapid relief of acute asthma episodes requiring inhaled short-acting bronchodilator. Increased risk of pneumonia. Risk of impaired adrenal function in patients transferring from oral steroids & requiring high dose emergency corticosteroid therapy or prolonged treatment at highest recommended dose of inhaled corticosteroids. Feeling unwell during w/drawal phase eg, muscle & joint pain. May unmask allergies eg, rhinitis & eczema. Concomitant use w/ oral ketoconazole & itraconazole in long-term treatment. Severely compromised liver function. Pregnancy. Childn (monitor growth).
Adverse Reactions
Mild throat irritation, candida infection in oropharynx, hoarseness, coughing.
Drug Interactions
Increased systemic exposure w/ CYP3A4 inhibitors eg, ketoconazole & itraconazole.
