Rifampicin

Indications/Uses

All forms of TB & gonorrhoea, resp tract, skin & soft tissue, biliary tract & UTI.

Dosage/Direction for Use

Gonorrhea 900 mg as a single dose. TB 450-600 mg as a single daily dose.

Administration

Should be taken on an empty stomach: Best taken 1 hr before or 2 hr after meals.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity. Jaundice.

Special Precautions

Alcoholics. Impaired liver function. 1st trimester of pregnancy.

Adverse Reactions

GI effects, abnormal liver function, jaundice, febrile reaction w/ flu-like symptoms. Alteration in kidney function & renal failure (due to hypersensitivity). Skin reactions, eosinophilia, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, purpura, hemolysis, shock. Red colouring of urine, sputum, tears, staining of soft contact lens.

Drug Interactions

Decreases effectiveness of corticosteroids, coumarin anticoagulant, digitoxin, methadone, OC, tolbutamide.
