Procaterol HCl hemihydrate.
Action
Meptin causes potent bronchodilation with as little as 25 mcg. It has rapid onset and long duration of action.
Meptin has higher selectivity for β2-adrenoceptors in bronchi and potent antiallergic effect with no drug tolerance.
Indications/Uses
Remission of various symptoms caused by respiratory obstruction from the following conditions: Bronchial asthma, chronic bronchitis, pulmonary emphysema and acute bronchitis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Tablet: Adults: One 50-mcg tab. Children ≥6 years: One 25-mcg tab. All doses to be taken once before bed or twice daily (in the morning and at bedtime) by the oral route. The dosage should be increased or decreased depending upon patient's age, condition, etc.
Syrup: Adults: 10 mL (equivalent to procaterol HCl 50 mcg) once at bedtime or twice daily (in the morning and at bedtime) by the oral route.
Children ≥6 years: 5 mL (equivalent to procaterol HCl 25 mcg) once at bedtime or twice daily (in the morning and at bedtime) by the oral route.
Children <6 years: 0.25 mL/kg body weight (equivalent to procaterol HCl 1.25 mg/kg) once at bedtime or twice daily (in the morning and at bedtime) by the oral route.
The dose may be adjusted according to the patient's age and severity of symptoms.
In infants <6 years, the dosage should be adjusted as follows.
Children weighing 4 kg: 1 mL; 6 kg: 1.5 mL; 8 kg: 2 mL; 10 kg: 2.5 mL; 12 kg: 3 mL; 14 kg: 3.5 mL; 16 kg: 4 mL; 18 kg: 4.5 mL; 20 kg: 5 mL.
Special Precautions
Excessive use of β-stimulants possibly causes arrhythmia and cardiac arrest. Care is therefore necessary not to overdose the drug.
Meptin tablet and syrup should be used with caution in patients with hyperthyroidism, hypertension, cardiac diseases and diabetes.
Use in pregnancy & lactation: The safe use of Meptin tablets, syrup and aerosol has not been established in human pregnancy. The use of the drug in pregnancy or women of childbearing potential requires that the expected therapeutic benefit of the drug be weighed against its possible hazards to the mother or child.

Adverse Reactions
Cardiovascular: Occasional palpitation, flush and rare sense of fever have been reported.
Neuropsychic: Occasional tremor, dizziness, headache and rare sleeplessness and ringing in the ear have been reported.
Gastrointestinal: Occasional nausea has been reported.
Hypersensitivity: Occasional rash has been reported.
Others: Rare thirst, general fatigue and nasal congestion have been reported.
