Fosfomycin trometamol
Indications/Uses
Treatment of uncomplicated bladder infection in women & female adolescents. Prophylaxis for transrectal prostate biopsy in adult men.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Uncomplicated bladder infection Women & female adolescent 1 sachet (3 g). Prophylaxis for transrectal prostate biopsy 1 sachet 3 hr prior to procedure, & 1 sachet 24 hr after the procedure.
Administration
Should be taken on an empty stomach: Take 2-3 hr before or after meals, preferably before going to bed after emptying the bladder. Dissolve the content of 1 sachet in a glass of water & drink immediately.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Patients w/ persistent bladder infections; previous diarrhea after taking any other antibiotics; sugar intolerance. Monitor for serious side effects eg, allergic reactions & large intestine inflammation. Contains sulphites which may rarely cause severe hypersensitivity reactions & bronchospasm. May affect ability to drive or use machines. Do not use in patients w/ severe renal impairment (CrCl <10 mL/min). Pregnancy & lactation. Do not give to childn <12 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Headache, dizziness, diarrhea, nausea, indigestion, abdominal pain, vulvovaginitis.
Drug Interactions
Reduced uptake w/ metoclopramide. Altered effect of anticoagulants. Delayed absorption w/ food.
