Indications/Uses
Type 2 DM in adults when diet, exercise & wt loss alone inadequately keeps blood sugar at the correct level.

Dosage/Direction for Use
Recommended starting dose: 30 mg. Usual dose: One to four 30-mg tab or ½ to two 60-mg tab in a single intake at breakfast time. Max: 120 mg.

Overdosage
View Normodiab overdosage for action to be taken in the event of an overdose.
Administration
Should be taken with food. 30mg tab: Swallow whole, do not chew/crush. 60mg tab: Swallow 1/2 or whole tab in 1 piece. Do not chew/crush.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to gliclazide, other sulphonylureas, or hypoglycaemic sulphonamides. Patients w/ insulin-dependent diabetes (type 1); ketone bodies & sugar in urine, diabetic pre-coma or coma; severe kidney or liver disease. Concomitant use w/ miconazole. Lactation.

Special Precautions
Regularly monitor blood (& possibly urine) sugar level & HbA1c during treatment. Increased risk of hypoglycaemia in the 1st few wk of treatment. Risk of haemolytic anaemia in patients w/ existing or family history of G6PD deficiency. Drinking alcohol is not recommended. Contains lactose. May impair ability to drive or operate machinery. Not recommended for use during pregnancy; in childn & adolescents.

Adverse Reactions
Hypoglycaemia.
Drug Interactions
Strengthened blood-sugar-lowering effect w/ other oral antidiabetics or insulin; antibiotics (eg, sulphonamides, clarithromycin); β-blockers, or ACE inhibitors (eg, captopril, enalapril); antifungals (eg, miconazole, fluconazole); H2 receptor antagonists; MAOIs; analgesics or antirheumatics (eg, phenylbutazone, ibuprofen); alcohol-containing medicines. Weakened blood-sugar-lowering effect w/ chlorpromazine; corticosteroids or tetracosactrin; IV salbutamol, ritodrine, terbutaline; danazol. Increased effects of warfarin.
