Ursodeoxycholic acid
Indications/Uses
Treatment of primary biliary cirrhosis, bile reflux gastritis & dissolution of cholesterol gallstones.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Treatment of primary biliary cirrhosis 12-16 mg/kg daily in divided doses. Treatment of bile reflux gastritis 1 cap daily for 10-14 days. Dissolution of cholesterol gallstones 10 mg/kg daily for 6-24 mth.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Inflammatory bile duct disease, obstructive hepatobiliary disease, acute cholecystitis. Pregnant & fertile women who do not use contraception. Lactation.
Special Precautions
Periodic assessment of liver function.
Adverse Reactions
Soft, loose stools or diarrhoea.
Drug Interactions
Reduced effects of colestyramine, coletipol, Al(OH)3- & smectite-containing antacids, ciprofloxacin, dapsone, nitrendipine. Increased effects of ciclosporin.
