Live attenuated Oka strain of varicella-zoster virus
Indications/Uses
Active immunisation of healthy subjects ≥9 mth of age against varicella.
Dosage/Direction for Use
SC Adult, adolescent ≥13 yr & childn 9 mth to 12 yr 2 doses. Administer 2nd dose at least 6 wk after 1st dose.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to any component of the vaccine, to neomycin, or after previous administration of varicella vaccine. Subjects w/ primary or acquired immunodeficiency states w/ total lymphocyte count <1,200/mm3; presenting other evidence of lack of cellular immune competence; receiving immunosuppressive therapy including high-dose corticosteroids. Pregnant women. Avoid pregnancy for 1 mth after vaccination.
Special Precautions
Rare anaphylactic reaction following vaccination. Do not administer intravascularly or intradermally. Postpone vaccination in case of acute severe febrile illness. Allow alcohol & other disinfecting agents to evaporate from skin before inj since they can inactivate the attenuated viruses in the vaccine. Limited protection against varicella may be obtained by vaccination up to 72 hr after exposure to natural disease. Risk of mild breakthrough cases of varicella disease. Risk of transmission of Oka vaccine virus. Limited data on use in immunocompromised subjects. No data regarding use in breastfeeding women.
Adverse Reactions
Pain, redness. Rash; swelling at inj site, fever (oral/axillary temp ≥37.5°C or rectal temp ≥38°C).
Drug Interactions
Temporary depression of tuberculin skin sensitivity. Likelihood of vaccine failure w/ immune globulins or blood transfusion. Reports of Reye's syndrome w/ salicylates. Short-lived suppression of cell-mediated immune response w/ measles vaccination. Do not administer at the same time as other live attenuated vaccines in high-risk patients. Administer different injectable vaccines at different inj sites.
