Ferric hydroxide sucrose complex
Indications/Uses
Fe deficiency in the following indications: Where there is a clinical need for a rapid Fe supply; in patients who cannot tolerate oral Fe therapy or who are non-compliant; where oral Fe prep are ineffective (eg, in active inflammatory bowel disease).
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 5-10 mL (100-200 mg Fe) once to 3 times a wk depending on Hb level. Administer via drip infusion, slow IV inj or directly into the venous line of the dialysis machine. Max tolerated dose: As inj given not more than 3 times per wk: 10 mL (200 mg Fe)/day injected over at least 10 min. As infusion given not more than once per wk: Patient >70 kg: 500 mg Fe over at least 3½ hr. Patient ≤70 kg: 7 mg Fe/kg over at least 3½ hr. Childn Max: 0.15 mL (3 mg Fe)/kg, not more than 3 times per wk.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. IV Fe-containing products must not be used in patients w/ serious hypersensitivity to other parenteral Fe products. Anaemia not caused by Fe deficiency. Fe overload or disturbances in Fe utilisation. Pregnancy (1st trimester).
Special Precautions
Allergic or anaphylactoid reactions. Patients w/ history of asthma, eczema, other atopic allergies or allergic reactions to other parenteral Fe prep; liver dysfunction; acute or chronic infection. Avoid paravenous leakage. Pregnancy (2nd/3rd trimester). Childn.
Adverse Reactions
Dysgeusia, hypotension, HTN, nausea, inj/infusion site reactions.
Drug Interactions
Should not be concomitantly administered w/ oral Fe prep.
