Indications/Uses
Treatment of schizophrenia & moderate to severe manic episodes. Prevention of recurrence in patients w/ bipolar disorder whose manic episode has responded to olanzapine treatment.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Administration
May be taken with or without food: Place in the mouth to rapidly disperse then swallow. May also disperse tab in a full glass of water or other suitable beverage (orange/apple juice/milk/coffee) immediately before administration.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Patients w/ eye problems eg, glaucoma.
Special Precautions
Not recommended in elderly patients w/ dementia. Risk of unusual movements mainly of the face or tongue; (very rarely) combination of fever, faster breathing, sweating, muscle stiffness, & drowsiness or sleepiness; wt gain; high blood sugar & levels of fat; formation of blood clots. Caution in patients w/ stroke or mini stroke; Parkinson's disease; prostate problems; paralytic ileus; liver or kidney disease; blood disorders; heart disease; DM; seizures; salt depletion due to prolonged severe diarrhea & vomiting or concomitant diuretics. Reports of DRESS. Contains aspartame; may be harmful to phenylketonurics. Patients w/ rare hereditary problems of galactose intolerance, Lapp lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption should not take this medicine. May impair ability to drive or operate machines. Neonates exposed to antipsychotic drugs during the 3rd trimester of pregnancy are at risk for extrapyramidal &/or w/drawal symptoms following delivery. Should be used during pregnancy only if potential benefit justifies potential risk of fetus. Should not be given when breast-feeding. Not for patients <18 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Wt gain, sleepiness, increases in blood prolactin levels, orthostatic hypotension in the early stages of treatment. Changes in the levels of some blood cells, circulating fats & early in treatment, temporary increases in liver enzymes; increases in blood & urine sugar level; increases in levels of uric acid & creatine phosphokinase in the blood; feeling more hungry; dizziness; restlessness; tremor; dyskinesias; constipation; dry mouth; rash; loss of strength; extreme tiredness; water retention leading to swelling of the hands, ankles or feet; fever, joint pain & sexual dysfunctions eg, decreased libido in males & females or erectile dysfunction in males.
Drug Interactions
Risk of drowsiness w/ antidepressants, anxiolytics or tranquillisers; alcohol. Dose adjustment of Zylanza may be necessary w/ medicines for Parkinson's disease; carbamazepine; fluvoxamine or ciprofloxacin.
