Action
Diosmin and hesperidin are venotonic and vascular protective flavonoid compounds which act on the vascular return system. The combination increases venous tone by inhibiting the breakdown and prolonging the activity of norepinephrine, thus reducing venous distensibility and stasis. At the microcirculatory level, it normalises capillary permeability and reinforces capillary resistance. Additionally, it improves lymphatic drainage by decreasing the intralymphatic pressure and enhancing the removal of interstitial fluid. Diosmin, a naturally occurring flavonoid, may be synthesised from hesperidin or commonly isolated from citrus fruits. Synonym(s): Diosmin: Diosmine.
Onset: 2 hours.
Absorption: Rapidly absorbed.
Metabolism: Diosmin: Extensively metabolised into phenolic acids. Hesperidin: Converted by the microflora of the colon to hesperetin.
Excretion: Diosmin: Mainly via faeces (approx 80%); urine (approx 14%). Elimination half-life: 11 hours.
Storage
Oral: Store below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture.
