Dosage/Direction for Use

Intravenous
Scorpion envenomation
Adult: Initially, 3 vials via IV infusion over 10 minutes; additional vials may be administered at 1-vial increments every 30-60 minutes as necessary.
Child: Same as adult dose.
Special Precautions
Patients with known allergies to horse protein; previous treatment with Centruroides immune F(ab')2 or other equine-derived antivenom/antitoxin. Pregnancy and lactation. Monitoring Parameters Monitor for signs and symptoms of envenomation (e.g. opsoclonus, involuntary muscle movement, slurred speech, paraesthesia, respiratory distress, vomiting, frothy sputum, salivation), serum sickness (e.g. fever, joint pain, muscle pain, rash), and acute antivenom hypersensitivity reactions (e.g. fever, myalgia, arthralgia, rash).
Adverse Reactions
Significant: Anaphylaxis, anaphylactoid reactions, delayed serum sickness; disease transmission (obtained from equine plasma). Vomiting, pyrexia, rash, nausea and pruritus, hypersensitivity reactions (e.g. anaphylactic shock), delayed allergic reactions (e.g. serum sickness). Chest tightness, palpitation. Eye disorders: Ocular oedema. Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea. General disorders and administration site conditions: Fever, fatigue, lethargy. Infections and infestations: Transmission of infectious agents (e.g. viruses). Nervous system disorders: Headache, ataxia. Myalgia Respiratory, thoracic and mediastinal disorders: Rhinorrhea, cough, aspiration, hypoxia, respiratory distress. Skin and subcutaneous tissue disorders: Rash, pruritus.
Action
Scorpion venom antisera is a polyvalent antivenom that contains venom-specific F(ab') fragments of IgG which bind and neutralize venom toxins. The use of a scorpion venom antiserum appropriate for the species of scorpion can prevent or reduce symptoms after bites. It should be given with the least possible delay; other general supportive measures and symptomatic treatment are also required.
Onset: Time to resolution of symptoms: 1.91 ± 1.4 hours.
Excretion: Elimination half-life: 159 ± 57 hours.
Storage
Intravenous: Store at 25°C. Do not freeze.
