Ursodeoxycholic acid
Indications/Uses
Cholestatic hepatitis, chronic active hepatitis (primary biliary cirrhosis/PBC, primary sclerosing cholangitis/PSC). Radiolucent cholesterol gallstones not exceeding 20 mm in diameter.
Dosage/Direction for Use
8-10 mg/kg in 2 or 3 divided doses. Usually 1 cap twice daily.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Take w/ milk or meals.
Contraindications
Calcified cholesterol stones, radiopaque stones or radiolucent bile pigment stones. Unremitting acute cholecystitis, cholangitis, biliary obstruction, pancreatitis or biliary-GI fistula.
Special Precautions
Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Rarely, diarrhea, pruritus, increase of liver enzyme, gallstone calcification, skin rashes, urticaria, dry skin, cold sweat, hair loss; nausea, vomiting, indigestion, metallic taste, abdominal & biliary pain, cholecystitis, constipation, stomatitis, flatulence; dizziness, fatigue, anxiety, depression, sleep disorder, arthralgia.
Drug Interactions
Cholestyramine or Al hydroxide blocks the absorption.
