Hydroxychloroquine sulfate
Indications/Uses
SLE, RA, Sjogren syndrome, autoimmune disease.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 1-2 times daily. Childn 1 tab is not suitable for childn weighing <31 kg. Max: 6.5 mg/kg/day based on ideal body wt.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to 4-aminoquinolone compd. Eye maculopathy. Childn <6 yr (<31 kg).
Special Precautions
Eye exam related to the risk of retinopathy before treatment & after 5 yr of treatment, repeated every 12 mth. Stricter eye exam are recommended at daily doses exceeding the normal dose. Low visual acuity. Impaired renal function. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Retinopathy, hypoglycemia, allergic reaction, skin rash, pruritus, nausea, diarrhea, anorexia, skeletal muscle myopathy or neuropathy.
Drug Interactions
May increase serum levels of digoxin. Reduction of insulin dose or antidiabetic drugs may be needed. May prolong QT interval & increase risk of ventricular arrhythmias w/ drugs that have the potential to induce cardiac arrhythmias eg, metfloquine. Antiepileptic drug activity may be disrupted. May increase side effects w/ MTX. Increased levels of cyclosporine.
