Haloperidol
Indications/Uses
Psychomotor agitation associated w/ behavioural lability.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Initially 0.5-2 mg 2-3 times daily for moderate conditions, may be increased to 3-5 mg 2-3 times daily for severe conditions. Childn 3-12 yr Initially 0.5 mg 2-3 times daily. IM/IV Agitation & aggressiveness associated w/ acute psychosis (eg, mania, hypomania, acute schizophrenia, toxic confusional states including delirium tremens) Initially 2-10 mg.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/ meals to minimise GI irritation.
Contraindications
Endogenous depression w/o agitation, neurological disorders w/ pyramidal or extrapyramidal symptoms, comatose conditions & severe CNS depression. Childn <3 yr.
Special Precautions
Hyperthyroidism, CV disorders. Hepatic dysfunction.
Adverse Reactions
Muscular hypertonia & trembling, restlessness, uncoordinated eye movement, orthostatic hypotension, galactorrhea.
Drug Interactions
Lithium, methyldopa, anticonvulsants, alcohol, CNS depressants & opiates.
