Tranexamic acid
Indications/Uses
Local fibrinolysis in prostatectomy, epistaxis & canisation of the cervix. Management of dental extraction in haemophiliacs. Hereditary angioneurotic oedema.
Dosage/Direction for Use
FC tab 1 tab 3-4 times daily. Patient w/ renal insufficiency serum creatinine 120-250 micromol/L 15 mg/kg twice daily, 250-500 micromol/L 15 mg/kg 24 hrly, >500 micromol/L 12.5 mg/kg 24 hrly. Inj Local fibrinolysis 500-1,000 mg slow IV 3 times daily. Impaired renal function serum creatinine 120-250 micromol/L 10 mg/kg twice daily, 250-500 micromol/L 10 mg/kg/day, >500 micromol/L 5 mg/kg 24 hrly.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hematuria, disturbances in color vision, high thrombotic risk. Severe renal insufficiency.
Special Precautions
Renal insufficiency, massive haematuria from upper urinary tract. Perform regular eye exam & LFTs in long-term treatment of patients w/ hereditary angioneurotic oedema. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, color vision disturbance, hypotension (rapid IV).
Drug Interactions
FC tab: OC containing estrogen. Inj: Soln containing penicillin.
