Indications/Uses
As an adjunct to diet to reduce hypercholesterolemia & mixed dyslipidemia (Fredrickson types IIa & IIb). To reduce the risk of mortality by reducing coronary death, MI, undergoing revascularization procedures, stroke & to slow progression of coronary atherosclerosis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Initially 10-20 mg once daily in the evening. Primary hypercholesterolemia w/ a history of liver or kidney dysfunction Elderly Initially 10 mg/day in the evening.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Active liver disease or unexplained persistent serum transaminase elevation. Pregnancy & lactation.
Special Precautions
Perform periodic LFTs. History of liver disease. Discontinue use in patients w/ acute myopathy or risk of secondary renal failure due to rhabdomyolysis or elevation of creatinine phosphokinase; not for homozygous familial hypoprolactinemia. Alcoholism. Childn <18 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dyspepsia, constipation, flatulence, rhabdomyolysis, myopathy, dizziness, headache, anemia, thrombocytopenia, leucopenia, temporary asymptomatic eosinophilia, gynecomastia, loss of libido, erectile dysfunction, cataract, ophthalmoplegia, pancreatitis, anorexia.
Drug Interactions
HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor, fibrates, cyclosporin, erythromycin; cholestyramine/colestipol; warfarin; cimetidine
