Famotidine
Indications/Uses
Short-term treatment of active duodenal & gastric ulcer. Maintenance treatment for patients w/ duodenal ulcers who have recently recovered from active ulcers. Treatment of pathological hypersecretory conditions (Zollinger-Ellison syndrome & multiple endocrine adenomas).
Dosage/Direction for Use
Duodenal ulcer Acute treatment: 40 mg once daily at bed time or 20 mg twice daily for 4 wk. Max: 6-8 wk. Maintenance treatment: 20 mg once daily at bedtime. Gastric ulcer Acute therapy: 40 mg once daily at bedtime. Pathological hypersecretory conditions 20 mg 6 hrly.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity.
Special Precautions
Possibility of gastric malignancy should be excluded before treatment. Patients w/ kidney disorders. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn.
Adverse Reactions
Fever, asthenia, fatigue, arrhythmia, AV block, palpitation, cholestatic jaundice, abnormality of liver enzyme, nausea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort, anorexia, dry mouth, agranulocytosis, pancytopenia, leucopenia, thrombocytopenia, anaphylaxis, angioderma, orbital or facial edema, urticaria, rash, muscle cramps, arthralgia, hallucination, confusion, agitation, depression, anxiety, reduced libido, paresthesia, insomnia, somnolence, bronchospasm, alopecia, acne, pruritus, dry skin, flushing, tinnitus, impotence, gynecomastia.
