Contents
Ampicillin sodium.
Indications/Uses
Upper and lower respiratory tract infection, genitourinary tract and gastrointestinal tract infection, gonorrhea, septicemia, peritonitis, bacterial endocarditis, osteomyelitis, meningitis, urinary tract infection, sepsis, skin and soft tissue infection.
Dosage/Direction for Use
IM: Adults: 250-1000 mg 4 times daily. Children: 50-100 mg/kg body weight/day in 4 divided doses.
IV: Adults: 1-2 g daily in 1 or 2 equal doses.
IV Infusion: Adults: 2-4 g daily in 1 or 2 equal doses over 1-2 hrs. Children: 100-200 mg/kg body weight/day.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to penicillins. High risk of skin rashes with infectious mononucleosis.
Special Precautions
Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins. Renal impairment. Lymphatic leukemia. Past or family history of allergic reactions.
Adverse Reactions
Gastrointestinal disturbances, skin rashes, pruritus, urticaria, fever, anaphylaxis, blood disorder, superinfection.
Drug Interactions
Probenecid impairs drug excretion. Decreased efficacy of oral contraceptives and atenolol. Allopurinol increases risk of skin rashes.
