Meropenem
Indications/Uses
Pneumonia; lung & bronchial infections in patients w/ cystic fibrosis; complicated UTI, abdominal & skin & soft tissue infections; infections caught during or after delivery; meningitis. May be used in management of neutropenic patients w/ fever suspected to be due to bacterial infection.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 500 mg-2 g as inj or infusion every 8 hr. Childn 3 mth-12 yr 10-40 mg/kg as inj or infusion every 8 hr, weighing >50 kg Adult dose.
Contraindications
Allergy to meropenem or other antibiotics eg, penicillins, cephalosporins or carbapenems.
Special Precautions
Patients w/ severe diarrhea after taking other antibiotics. Patients on controlled Na diet. May develop a +ve Coombs test. Hepatic or renal impairment. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Abdominal pain; nausea; vomiting; diarrhoea; headache; skin rash, itchy skin; pain & inflammation; increased platelets in blood; changes in blood tests including liver tests.
Drug Interactions
Concomitant use w/ probenecid. May decrease effect of Na valproate.
