Indications/Uses
Treatment & prevention of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women; reduces incidence of vertebral fractures & composite endpoint of no vertebral osteoporosis-related fractures. Increases bone mass in men w/ osteoporosis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 1 tab once a wk taken on the same day each wk.
Administration
Should be taken on an empty stomach: Take at the same time each week at least 30 min before the 1st food/other medicine/drink. Take w/ a glass of plain water (≥120 mL) while in an upright position. Do not lie down for 30 min after taking. Swallow whole, do not suck/chew.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Hypocalcaemia. Severe renal impairment (CrCl <30 mL/min). Pregnancy & lactation.
Special Precautions
Not to be taken w/ foods, drinks & medicinal products containing polyvalent cations eg, Ca, Mg, Fe & Al. Osteonecrosis of the jaw. Patients w/ history of oesophageal disorders (eg, stricture or achalasia); unable to stay in upright position for at least 30 min after taking the tab; active or recent oesophageal or upper GI problems. Treat hypocalcaemia & other bone & mineral metabolism disturbances (ie, parathyroid dysfunction, hypovitaminosis D) prior to therapy. Consider dental exam w/ appropriate preventive dentistry prior to treatment in patients w/ concomitant risk factors (eg, cancer, chemotherapy, RT, corticosteroids, poor oral hygiene) & avoid invasive dental procedures during treatment. Not to be taken by patients w/ rare hereditary problems of galactose intolerance, Lapp lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption. Not to be used during pregnancy or lactation. Childn & adolescents. Elderly >80 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Headache; constipation, dyspepsia, nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhoea; musculoskeletal pain.
Drug Interactions
Medications containing polyvalent cations eg, Ca, Mg, Fe & Al will interfere w/ absorption.
