Vancomycin HCl
Indications/Uses
Infections caused by Staphylococci eg, bone & soft tissue infections, pneumonia, septicaemia. Prevention of infections during operations or dental procedures. May be given as drinkable soln in severe diarrhoea.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult IV 500 mg every 6 hr or 1,000 mg every 12 hr. PO 500 mg daily in divided doses for 7-10 days. Max oral dose: 2 g/day. Childn IV 10 mg/kg every 6 hr. PO 40 mg/kg daily divided into 3 or 4 doses for 7-10 days. Max oral dose: 2 g/day.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May mix flavoring syrup to soln to improve taste.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Allergic reaction to other antibiotic. Difficulty in hearing. Kidney trouble.
Special Precautions
General anaesth. Concomitant use w/ other antibiotics that affect kidneys eg, amphotericin B, aminoglycosides, bacitracin, polymyxin B, colistin, viomycin or cisplatin. Monitor blood count, kidney & hearing. Kidney & liver problems. Pregnancy & lactation. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Severe allergic reaction; kidney troubles; hearing difficulty; low blood cell count; feeling sick.
Drug Interactions
Concomitant use w/ any other antibiotics.
