Chloramphenicol palmitate
Indications/Uses
Rickettsial infections, typhoid fever, & severe infections due to moderately resistant organisms.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & childn 50 mg/kg in divided doses every 6 hr, up to 100 mg/kg in severe infections due to moderately resistant organisms. Duration of treatment: Rickettsial diseases Continue for 4 days after temp is normal; typhoid fever 8-10 days. Full-term infant >2 wk Up to 50 mg/kg daily in 4 divided doses. Premature & full-term neonate 25 mg/kg daily.
Administration
Should be taken on an empty stomach: Take 1 hr before or 2 hr after meals.
Contraindications
History of hypersensitivity or toxic reaction. Minor infection, prophylaxis.
Special Precautions
Serious & fatal blood dyscrasias (aplastic & hypoplastic anemia, thrombocytopenia & granulocytopenia). Impaired hepatic or severe renal failure (reduce dose). Avoid repeated courses & prolonged treatment. Perform periodic blood exams. Avoid concomitant administration w/ other drugs liable to depress bone marrow function. Pregnancy & lactation. Risk of grey syndrome in newborn infants.
Adverse Reactions
Bone marrow depression, aplastic anemia, hemolytic anemia, hypersensitivity reaction; GI symptoms including nausea, vomiting & diarrhea; stomatitis, glossitis & rectal irritation.
