Ibuprofen
Indications/Uses
Management of mild to moderate pain & inflammation in conditions eg, migraine, post-op & dental pain, musculoskeletal & joint disorders (eg, ankylosing spondylitis, OA & RA including juvenile RA), peri-articular disorders (eg, bursitis & tenosynovitis) & soft tissue disorders (eg, sprains & strains). Used to reduce fever.
Dosage/Direction for Use
5-10 mg/kg every 6-8 hr. Pain & fever 100 mg/5 mL Childn 11 yr 15 mL, 9-10 yr 12.5 mL, 6-8 yr 10 mL, 4-5 yr 7.5 mL, 2-3 yr 5 mL. 200 mg/5 mL Childn 11 yr 7.5 mL, 4-10 yr 5 mL, 2-3 yr 2.5 mL. Max: Not to be used >qid & not to be given >10 days. Juvenile RA 7.5-12.5 mg/kg every 6 hr.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Take w/ food/milk if stomach upset occurs.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to ibuprofen, aspirin or other NSAIDs. Right before or after heart surgery. History of stroke, heart attack, uncontrolled high BP or CHF. Bronchospasm, angioedema or nasal polyps precipitated by ibuprofen, aspirin & other NSAIDs. Advanced kidney or liver disease.
Special Precautions
Discontinue use if an allergic reaction occurs; if childn experience any sign of stomach bleeding (eg, feels faint, vomits blood, has bloody or black stools), have stomach pain that does not get better, redness or swelling present in the painful area, fever or pain gets worse or lasts >3 days, do not get any relief w/in 1st day of treatment, any new symptoms appear. May cause severe stomach bleeding. Severe or persistent sore throat or sore throat accompanied by high fever, headache, nausea & vomiting may be serious. May increase risk of heart attack or stroke if used more than or longer than directed.
Adverse Reactions
Stomach & intestinal ulceration &/or bleeding; indigestion, heartburn, nausea, vomiting, anorexia, diarrhea & constipation.
Drug Interactions
May cause stomach & intestinal bleeding w/ warfarin, dicumarol or streptokinase. Decreased amount in the blood w/ aspirin. Increased risk of stomach & intestinal bleeding w/ salicylates & other NSAIDs eg, mefenamic acid, naproxen, diclofenac & ketoprofen. Increased amount of lithium in the blood. May cause acute reduction in kidney function & BP response to captopril, enalapril, ramipril, imidapril, fosinopril, lisinopril. May reduce effect of diuretics eg, furosemide & thiazide.
