Azithromycin dihydrate
Indications/Uses
Infections for resp pathogens; Chlamydia pneumoniae & Mycobacterium avium infection; uncomplicated chlamydial urethritis, cervicitis or pharyngitis; alternative drug for multi-drug resistant Salmonella typhi infection outside the CNS.
Dosage/Direction for Use
10 mg/kg/day for 3 days or alternatively, 10 mg/kg/dose as single dose on day 1, then 5 mg/kg/dose on days 2-5.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to azithromycin, erythromycin, any macrolide or ketolide antibiotic.
Special Precautions
May cause allergic type reactions including bronchial asthma due to tartrazine content. Hepatic impairment. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Diarrhoea, abdominal pain, nausea, flatulence.
Drug Interactions
Reduced peak serum conc w/ antacids. Impaired microbial metabolism & possible increased levels of digoxin. Increased conc of phosphorylated zidovudine. Possible ergotism w/ ergot derivatives. May potentiate anticoagulation w/ coumarin-type oral anticoagulants. Elevated Cmax & AUC0-5 w/ ciclosporin. Increased conc w/ nelfinavir.
