Cefixime trihydrate
Indications/Uses
Treatment of susceptible infections including gonorrhea, otitis media, pharyngitis, lower resp tract infections eg, bronchitis & UTI.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 400 mg once daily or 200 mg every 12 hr. Childn 8 mg/kg/day or 4 mg/kg/day every 12 hr.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/ food or milk to reduce GI discomfort.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins, penicillin or to any β-lactam antibiotics.
Special Precautions
Hypersensitivity. Possible emergence & overgrowth of nonsusceptible bacteria or fungi. History of GI disease particularly colitis. Decreased prothrombin activity. Renal insufficiency. Childn <6 mth. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Diarrhea & stool changes; headache & dizziness; allergies in the form of rash, pruritus urticaria, drug fever & arthralgia; thrombocytopenia, leukopenia & eosinophilia; genital pruritus & vaginitis.
Drug Interactions
False +ve reaction for glucose in the urine w/ Benedict's or Fehling's soln or w/ Cu sulphate test; Coombs' test. Carbamazepine, nifedipine, probenecid, oral anticoagulants (warfarin).
