Oxymetazoline HCl
Indications/Uses
Symptomatic relief of nasal congestion due to conditions eg, common cold, sinusitis, hay fever or other upper resp allergies, & may also be used in the adjunctive treatment of middle ear infection.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & childn >10 yr 2 sprays into each nostril. Childn 6-10 yr 1 spray into each nostril. Do not repeat at intervals <12 hr. Do not exceed 7 days of treatment.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to oxymetazoline or other adrenergic agents. Patients taking MAOIs or in patients who have taken MAOIs in the previous 2 wk; w/ narrow-angle glaucoma; after trans-sphenoidal hypophysectomy; w/ inflammation of skin & mucosa of nasal vestibule & encrustation (rhinitis sicca); acute CV disease or cardiac asthma; severe high BP.
Special Precautions
May cause rebound congestion if used for >3 days. Not to be used by patients who have heart disease, high BP, thyroid disease, diabetes, or difficulty in urination due to enlargement of prostate gland. Use of product by > 1 person may spread infection. Patients w/ HTN or signs of reduced placental perfusion. Frequent or prolonged use of high doses may reduce placental perfusion. Pregnancy. Do not use during breast feeding. Not recommended for use in childn <6 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Nasal burning, nasal stinging, sneezing or increased nasal discharge.
Drug Interactions
May potentiate pressor effects w/ TCAs, maprotiline, other vasoconstrictive drugs or MAOIs.
