Escitalopram oxalate
Indications/Uses
Depression, panic disorder w/ or w/o agoraphobia, generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder & obsessive-compulsive disorder.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Depression Initially 10 mg once daily, may be increased to a max of 20 mg once daily at least a wk. Panic disorder w/ or w/o agoraphobia Initially 5 mg once daily, increased to 10 mg once daily after a wk. Max: 20 mg once daily. Elderly Initially ½ the usual dose & lower max dose.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Discontinue in patients entering a manic phase & if seizure develops. Patients w/ panic disorder & DM. Avoid in patients w/ unstable epilepsy & monitor in controlled epilepsy. Closely monitor for suicidal behavior during 1st few wk.
Adverse Reactions
Both genders: Nausea, insomnia, somnolence, increased sweating, diarrhea, constipation, dizziness, fatigue, decreased appetite, sinusitis, decreased libido, pyrexia, yawning. Gender specific: Ejaculation disorder, impotence, abnormal orgasm (female).
Drug Interactions
Increased risk of serotonin syndrome w/ MAOIs & other serotogenic medicines (eg, sumatriptan, tramadol).
