Gentamicin sulfate
Indications/Uses
Short-term treatment of serious infections eg, septicemia, bone & joints infections, skin & soft tissue infections, resp tract infections & post-op & intra-abdominal infections caused by susceptible strains of gm -ve bacteria.
Dosage/Direction for Use
IM/IV Adult w/ normal renal function 3 mg/kg daily in equally divided doses at 8 hr intervals. Life-threatening infections Up to 5 mg/kg daily in 3-4 equally divided doses, then reduced to 3 mg/kg daily as soon as clinically indicated. Childn 6-7.5 mg/kg daily in equally divided doses at 8 hr intervals; premature or full term neonate >1 wk 2.5 mg/kg every 12 hr.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Patients w/ neuromuscular disorder. Elderly. Premature & full-term neonates.
Adverse Reactions
Ototoxicity (dizziness, vertigo, ataxia, & auditory symptoms eg, tinnitus, roaring in the ears & varying degrees of hearing impairment) & nephrotoxicity (renal & electrolyte abnormalities). Hypersensitivity reactions including rash, stomatitis, muscle twitching & fever.
