Each tablet contains: Glimepiride 2 mg.
Glimepiride is a sulfonylurea anti-diabetic given by mouth in the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. They are used as supplement treatment by diet modification when such modification has not proved effective on its own.
Pharmacology: Pharmacokinetics: Glimepiride is completely absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. Peak plasma concentrations occur in 2 to 3 hours, and it is highly protein bound. The drug is extensively metabolized to two main metabolites, a hydroxy derivative and a carboxy derivative. The half-life after multiple doses is about 9 hours. Approximately 60% of a dose is eliminated in the urine and 40% in the feces.
Glimepiride is used in the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Usual dose is 1 to 2 mg daily by mouth initially, may be increased if necessary to 4 mg daily for maintenance or as prescribed by the physician.
Glimepiride should not be used in type 1 diabetes mellitus. Use in type 2 diabetes mellitus is contraindicated in patients with ketoacidosis and in those with severe infection, trauma or other severe conditions where the sulfonylurea is unlikely to control the hyperglycemia; insulin should be administered in such situations.
The usual adverse effects with glimepiride are gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea, vomiting, heartburn, anorexia, diarrhea and a metallic taste. Increase appetite and weight gain, rashes and pruritus may also occur.
Store at temperatures not exceeding 30°C.
