Metoprolol tartrate
Indications/Uses
Management of HTN, cardiac arrhythmias, angina pectoris, arrythmias, post MI. Prophylaxis of migraine & hyperthyroidism.
Dosage/Direction for Use
HTN Initially 100 mg daily, increased to 200 mg daily in 1-2 divided doses. Max: 400 mg/day. Angina 50-100 mg bid-tid. Arrhythmias 50 mg bid-tid up to 300 mg daily in divided doses. Migraine prophylaxis 100-200 mg daily in divided doses. Hyperthyroidism (adjunct) 50 mg qid.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Uncontrolled heart failure; metabolic acidosis, sinus bradycardia; partial heart block; bronchospasm or asthma, or history of obstructive airways disease.
Adverse Reactions
Tiredness, dizziness, GI symptoms & sleep disturbances.
Drug Interactions
May intensify effect w/ insulin or oral hypoglycemic agents. May intensify effects of antihypertensive medication (especially w/ prazosin). Stronger drop in BP w/ nitroglycerine or nifedipine-type Ca antagonist, verapamil or diltiazem-type Ca antagonist or other anti-arrhythmic agents. Lower hypertensive reactions w/ adrenaline or other substances w/ sympathomimetic actions & cardioselective β-blockers. Stronger drop in cardiac frequency or delay in stimulus conduction in heart w/ reserpine, α-methyldopa, clonidine, guanfacine or cardiac glycosides. Decreased plasma conc w/ rifampicin. Increased plasma conc w/ cimetidine. May reduce the hypotensive effect w/ indomethacin. May reduce elimination of other medications. Intensified sedative effect w/ alcohol. Anesth, clonidine.
