KCl 750 mg (equiv to K 10 mEq)
Indications/Uses
Prevention & treatment of hypokalemia.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Prevention of hypokalemia 20 mEq in single or in divided doses. Treatment of hypokalemia 40-100 mEq in divided doses. Max: 20 mEq/dose.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Swallow whole w/ a full glass of water, do not crush/chew.
Contraindications
Patients w/ hyperkalemia, renal failure or severe renal impairment, severe hemolytic reactions, untreated Addison's disease & acute dehydration; impaired GI motility. Caution in digitalized patients.
Special Precautions
Do not use in patients w/ kidney failure, Addison's disease, severe burns or other tissue injuries; hydrated patients or in concurrent use w/ diuretics & w/ high K levels in the blood; GI ulceration or obstruction, hyperchloraemia. Patients w/ cardiac disease, renal or adrenocortical insufficiency, acute dehydration or extensive tissue destruction. Regularly monitor clinical status, serum electrolytes & ECG in patients w/ cardiac or renal impairment.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea & digestive tract bleeding, uneven heartbeat, muscle weakness or limp feeling, severe stomach pain & numbness or tingling in hands, feet or mouth. Ulceration.
Drug Interactions
Increased serum K conc w/ K-sparing diuretics, ACE inhibitors, ciclosporin, K salts of penicillin. Avoid concomitant use w/ K-containing salt substitutes. Delayed gastric emptying w/ antimuscarinics.
