Hydroxyurea
Indications/Uses
Melanoma, resistant chronic myelocytic leukemia & recurrent metastatic or inoperable carcinoma of the ovary. Local control of primary squamous cell (epidermoid) carcinomas of the head & neck, excluding the lip.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Treatment of malignancies 20-30 mg/kg as single dose daily or 60-80 mg/kg single dose every 3rd day.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May open cap & empty contents into water while wearing protective clothing. Avoid skin & mucous membrane contact w/ powd.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Marked bone marrow depression, leukopenia (<2,500 WBC) or thrombocytopenia (<100,000), severe anemia. Pregnancy.
Special Precautions
Previous chemo- & radiotherapy. Irradiation therapy, severe anemia, marked renal dysfunction. Determine blood status, kidney & liver function prior to & during treatment. Consider mutagenic possibility before administering to male or female patients. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia, leukopenia, anemia, thrombocytopenia, headache, alopecia.
Drug Interactions
Concomitant use w/ radiation therapy. Live virus vaccines.
