Lactitol monohydrate
Indications/Uses
Constipation. Prevention & treatment of hepatic encephalopathy.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Constipation Adult 15-30 mL daily. Childn >6 yr 10-15 mL daily, 2-6 yr 10 mL daily. Prevention of hepatic encephalopathy 30 mL once daily in the evening. Acute hepatic encephalopathy 45-90 mL divided into 3 doses along w/ the main meals.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Appendicitis. Galactosemia. Patients w/ intestinal obstruction, or in cases of unexplained abdominal pain/bleeding.
Special Precautions
Hypersensitivity. Absorption of lactate from colonic metabolism can potentially result in acid-base disturbance. Diarrhea can be associated w/ hypokalemia & hyponatremia. K deficiency may increase risk of toxic effects of glycosides in patients receiving concomitant therapy. Periodic monitoring of serum electrolytes, blood glucose & lactate; regular monitoring of blood electrolyte levels in elderly or debilitated patients on long term treatment. Reduce quantity or suspend administration if watery stools are noticed. Correct any pre-existing electrolyte or water imbalance abnormalities. Not recommended in case of ileostomy. Treat fecal impaction prior to use. Advised to take w/ meal for patients who has complaint of nausea. Patients who need to undergo electrocauterisation procedures should have a bowel cleaning w/ a non fermentable soln. Avoid prolonged use of laxatives w/o interruption. Not to be given to patients w/ galactosaemia or intestinal obstruction. Not to be used in patients on low galactose diet. Patients w/ lactose intolerance or diabetes. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Abdominal distension/cramp & flatulence. Diarrhea.
Drug Interactions
Increased the K losses caused by other medicines (eg, thiazide diuretics, corticosteroids, carbenoxolone, amphotericin B). Increased digitalis toxicity. Increased in neomycin activity w/ neomycin. Can cause a reduction in acidification effect on intestinal microflora & consequently limiting therapeutic efficacy w/ large spectrum antibacterial agents.
