Silybin may increase the effect of drugs metabolized by the cytochrome P450 system (e.g., erythromycin, nifedipine, tamoxifen, warfarin, clopidogrel, fexofenadine, etc.).
Silybin may reduce the effect of metronidazole when used concomitantly.
Milk thistle may reduce the effectiveness of oral contraceptives.
Silybin may decrease insulin requirements of diabetic patients with alcoholic liver cirrhosis. However, no studies suggest altered glucose metabolism in patients without liver disease. Dosage adjustment and monitoring of blood glucose levels may be required. Tell the doctor about all medicines the patient are taking including supplements and herbal medicines.
